STELLENBERG HIGH SCHOOL
a Musical Play
by Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein 2nd.
What it’s about
Set in Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906, it tells the story of a cowboy named Curly (Ché-jean Jupp) and the girl he wants to marry, who's named Laurey (Nadia Davids).
But someone else wants to marry Laurey, too. Jud Fry (Jonathan Bouwer) is a coarse fellow who lives in a smokehouse. He doesn't stand a chance with Laurey, but he's got his heart set on her, and there's pretty much nothing he won't do to claim her.
A subplot involves a boy-crazy woman named Ado Annie (Anrika Engelbrecht). She's engaged to one man (Michael Lombard), who doesn't want to marry her, while another man, Will Parker (Hein Roelofse), desperately wants her to be his bride.
Everything comes to a head at a big party in town. An auction for a picnic basket of food prepared by Laurey becomes an aggressive showdown between Curly and Jud.
The show features Petro van den Heever, drama teacher at Stellenberg and accomplished actress, as Laurey’s Aunt Eller.
The delightful vocal score of 13 songs includes showstoppers like ‘Oh, what a beautiful morning’, ‘Oklahoma!’ and ‘People will say we’re in love.’
