On 3 May, Grade 11 learners, Annika Carstens and Marné van Butzelaar invited the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) to Stellenberg High School for a blood donating day.
These two learners created an opportunity to make a difference. Stellenberg learners, staff members and the community donated blood to save lives.
Annika says that it is great to see how these blood donating events are growing. More Stellenberg learners and the community feel the urge to be part of such an important cause.
On 18 July, Stellenberg High School will also host a shavathon and blood donating day. This charity event will be the school’s contribution to the 67 minutes for Mandela day.
Reece Frye (13), a grade 8 learner from Stellenberg High School, won the u/15 category of the Western Cape Schools Chess Tournament that was held from 30 April to 1 May 2016 at Shalimar Gardens, Athlone.
This achievement follows his third position during district play offs in February and first place in March during the Western Province trails.
At the South African Closed Chess Championships held in Bloemfontein from 20-26 March, Reece achieved a 10th place nationally in the u/14 category.
Reece also achieved the first position in the u/14 category of the South Africa Junior Championships Wildcard held in Cape Town from 8- 10 January 2016.
The Western Province did exceptionally well during the Western Cape Schools Chess Tournament. 60 % of all the medals (42 in total) went to WP players. All six gold medals went to the WP. 89% of WP players ended in the top half of the final results.
Reece has been selected to play in the SA Schools Chess Championship to be held in Durban during July 2016, as well as the African Youth Chess Championships to be held in Port Elizabeth in August 2016 .
"I am very proud and pleased with my chess results this year. My hard work and training with my coach, Edwin November, has bourne fruit. Chess is a great sport in which I meet new friends, travel extensively and it also assists me to focus on my school studies. I am grateful to Stellenberg High School for so enthusiastically supporting Chess," said Reece after his recent achievement.
